Samsung enters the fingerprint scanner fray with the S5, but how does it stack up to the iPhone 5S?

It really seems more of a gimmick and a “we’ve got to have a fingerprint scanner too” kinda thing rather than a well thought out and executed feature (as on the iPhone 5S)

You can see from the video that their fingerprint scanner isn’t as reliable as Apple’s and even their touch screen is kinda laggy. I’m actually kinda shocked that even after so many iterations, Samsung’s touchscreens are still not as responsive as Apple’s.

And even though the S5 can authorize Paypal transactions with the fingerprint scanner, what’s the point when you have to swipe it like 5 times before it can read your fingerprint?

I’ve used the 5S for months now and the fingerprint reader is pretty much flawless.

Imitators are never as good as the originators.

Western Digital My Book Studio External Hard Disk

Back in December, I had to buy some new hard disks to handle my work for Accenture.

I went straight to my favorite Mac reseller Epicenter at Pavilion to see what they had on offer.

The best bet seemed to be Western Digital’s range of external hard disks and I chose one that had Firewire 800.

I bought the My Passport Studio (below) first to see if it would be enough, but it turned out that I needed another one so then I bought the My Book Studio (above) as Epicenter was all out of the Passport when I went back a few days later.

Western Digital My Passport Studio External Hard Disk

I’m super superhappy with both hard disks. Not only are they ridiculously fast (FireWire 800 is about 30% faster than USB 2.0 - as tech journalists report), they are also beautiful to look at. Both have aluminium casings and the brushed metal finish looks the same as those on a MacBook. The build quality is amazing and both feel solid as a rock (though I’m not going to test them this way). The drives also come with WD’s SmartWare software, which has security functions and other nifty tools to help you get the most out of your hard disk.

Safe to say, I’m now a fan!

Seriously, once you’ve used a FireWire-equipped drive, you can’t use USB 2.0 (or less) again! Stuff that would take me an hour to transfer on USB now takes 10 minutes. It’s just ridiculous.

Just in case some of you were wondering why my blog has been pretty dead for the past couple of weeks – I called off to Kuala Lumpur to help Accenture with a project right after the Shell Helix Invasion Tour was over (literally the next day)

Accenture is one of the world’s biggest I.T. consultancies and they have a hand in most of the back-end software and implementation that many large corporations rely on to run their businesses.

I can’t talk about what I did (very top-secret, non-disclosure-agreement stuff) so I won’t.

I can however talk about some other stuff like:

This was the first time I’ve worked with a Sony EX3 HD camera. It is AWESOME.

Well it should be coz it costs RM42,000.00 each.

It was the first time I’ve used a SXS memory card. I always wondered what that slot was for!

With the new unibody MacBook Pros, you only get the SXS slot on the 17-inch version.

I had to buy 2 1TB hard-disks (FireWire, baby!) and use 2 MacBook Pros to do all my work.

I worked with 2 really hard-working dudes – Helmi (L) and Nasri (R)

That’s about all I can say (work-wise) … so now I’m back on the grid and rejoining civilization.

It was a tough 2-weeks – not a lot of sleep (but it was totally worth it)

I love working with Accenture and I’d like to thank them for giving me an opportunity to assist them with this project.

Thank you so much and I’ll see everyone in 2012!

Happy New Year to all of you!

Instagram - My Favorite App For The iPhone!

By far my favorite app for the iPhone is Instagram, a nifty photo sharing app that has become an indispensable part of my daily life.

I love taking photos (as most of you know) and Instagram has made it incredibly easy for iPhone users to share their snapshots with others.

Instagram is filled with a tightly-knit community of people who have a genuine appreciation of spontaneous photography, and I feel that they are mostly people who realize that it’s the COMPOSITION and NOT the equipment that you use that makes a great and engaging photo.

The super-friendly and supportive community on Instagram is definitely one of the major reasons why I’m such a big fan of the app.

Another reason I like Instagram is because I think THIS is what Twitter should have been like.

I’m not self-centered enough to have a Twitter account – i.e. I don’t think I’m important enough that people would want to know every fucking thing that I’m doing all the time, but Instagram lets users share creative photographs with like-minded people and you can also talk/comment/discuss about the photos, which is cool.

Instagram - My Favorite App For The iPhone!

To date, I’ve posted more than 1100 photos on Instagram, so if you have the app, check out my feed (username BadBoyBen)

If you have an iPhone but don’t have Instagram, download it and check it out (it’s free)

If you don’t have an iPhone then hurry up and buy one so you can start using Instagram!

Tengku Djan on Facebook

If you do a search for “Tengku Djan” on Facebook, quite a few results will show up.

I did this the other day, and I got quite confused.

As far as I know, there is only ONE Tengku Djan in the whole wide world, and I’m pretty sure this is NOT him:

Will the REAL Tengku Djan please stand up?

Oh wait, he just did.

Doctor PDA

A couple of months ago, my iPhone 2G had a nasty accident and the screen kinda broke.

Doctor PDA

I took it to my mate, Pinky, who is an expert on all smartphones, PDAs and iPhones (of course)

Don’t ask me why we call him Pinky, even though his namecard says Ping:

Doctor PDA

Hmm … interesting qualification. I wonder which university he graduated from?

Pinky’s shop also sells iPhones, iPads, HTC whatevers and basically every type of PDA and smartphone.

Doctor PDA

Pinky quickly found out what the issue was and replaced the broken parts for me.

Doctor PDA

The whole thing took about an hour and voila my 2G was working again!

Doctor PDA

Pinky’s shop is located in Prangin Mall, Penang and they have a super duper promotion now for ALL iPhone users: for only RM200, they will jailbreak your phone for you and install whatever apps you want BUT BUT BUT this service includes ALL future upgrades to the iPhone OS, so once a new firmware comes out (which is every couple of months) Pinky’s guys will upgrade the OS and re-jailbreak it for you.

Pretty sweet deal and really convenient for those of you who want a jailbroken phone but don’t know how to do it yourself!
