I think it’s no big secret that I love all things carbon fiber. I’ve been fascinated and infatuated by carbon fiber since I first saw it used on Formula One cars.

The close association with motor racing and, the allure of weight reduction and the distinctive look of the carbon fiber weave make it irresistible to me.

In recent years, carbon fiber has become widely available for commercial applications, and the price has dropped to the extent that even I can afford to have a carbon fiber bonnet and trunk on my car.

Other applications include carbon fiber “look” vinyl stickers and by far the best of these is made by 3M, a name synonymous with high quality adhesive tapes and stickers.

My buddy Tommy from Tommax Stickers is THE foremost expert in Penang at handling 3M carbon fiber vinyl.

Unlike other, cheaper, carbon fiber “look” vinyl stickers, the 3M version actually has a three-dimensional texture to it as opposed to only having a printed pattern. It is also designed to reflect light the same way real carbon fiber weave does.

One day I challenged Tommy to make the perfect cover for the Macbook Pro and he said okay without batting an eyelid.

I designed the layout and then two of us proceeded to work out how to get the perfect fit because we didn’t want something that was “99%” – we wanted something 100% spot on that we could take straight from the computerized cutter and stick onto my Macbook Pro.
