HAN CHIANG COLLEGE AUTOCROSS (PART 2)

Han Chiang College Autocross Competition

Here are the long overdue photos from the recent Han Chiang College Autocross Competition I participated in.

Everything has been happening at a breakneck pace since I returned from the Philippines and I have barely had time to breathe.

In case you’ve forgotten about this event, read my earlier post about it here.

I enjoyed this competition more than my first one at Sunway Carnival because there was a bigger variety of cars entering.

Variety is the spice of life, as they say, and it’s sooOoo boring turning up to events where 80% of the people drive the same fricking car.

Of course, the popular model of choice at this event was still the Proton Satria, but at least there were many other interesting cars there to pique my interest.

Timothy Ketit’s NA-powered Silvia turned up again, and this time his company Red Line was also one of the main sponsors of the competition.

Timothy enters every single gymkhana/autocross/autokhana/rally-x event humanly possible and I have to say I really respect his efforts in the Malaysian motorsports scene.

He’s one of the few people who regularly competes and keeps promoting good motorsports events – unlike a few people I saw in the car park who act like they are hardcore racers but never enter any events/races.

If there’s one type of person I have disliked since I was a kid – it’s the POSER.

Poser = Wanker

This is my buddy Darren’s RX-7 FC3S and it was his first time entering an autocross competition.

He did pretty well for his first time – he came 2nd in our class!

This is William’s all-conquering Proton Satria. William works at Northern Garage (where I service my car) so his car is always in tip-top shape. William won the 1600cc and below category.

Perodua Kancils (aka Daihatsu Mira in Japan) are a dime a dozen in Malaysia, but what a lot of people don’t realize is that they do really well in autocross/gymkhanas because they are small and light (can get around cones faster!)

Here is my friend Chong’s recently-restored S30 Fairlady. It might look half-decent in this photo but if you look at it real life, the paint job is shocking. And not to mention Chong committed SACRILEGE by putting R32 tailights on his car. It looks so fucking nasty I can’t bear to show you photos of it.

This is such a cool classic car, please treat it better, buddy!

Malaysian autocross/gymkhana king Julian Pang drove this beautiful Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution up from Kuala Lumpur.

However, he didn’t compete with this car – he borrowed someone else’s car, set the fastest time of the day AND won his class. That’s how good he is.

The Toyota MR-S was born to compete in autocross/gymkhanas. I loved the carbon fiber bonnet and boot this car had installed on it. It was pretty quick too except the driver went the wrong way a couple of times and got penalized with the maximum time. Pity!

This is my buddy Andy’s immaculate Subaru Impreza (GC8)

I can never get enough of the boxer burble on his car!

Andy enters autocross/gymkhana events across Malaysia whenever he can.

He drove pretty well at this event and FINALLY toasted his stock clutch after NINE years.

You need to drive harder bro! Stock clutches are only supposed to last you a month! Hahaha

Ahh … I love my car …

DC X Subaru represent. I have to say that DC makes killer kicks but their gear also snaps necks wherever I go!

I’m not sure about other people, but once I put on my full-face helmet, I kinda zone out and am oblivious to anything except whatever I am driving at the time, be it a car or go-kart.

It’s good for me because I am always able to concentrate on the race at hand and engine sounds are strangely soothing to me even when they are at high revs.

I can’t/won’t deny that I’m a hopeless petrolhead.

My favorite scent is Eau de Burnt Rubber. Hahaha

Jack Hoo took this brilliant shot of my car. Check out my rear wheel lifting off the ground – that’s how hard I was cornering.

After a gruelling day of racing, I managed to win my class, as well as the Best Motorsports Show Car award.

That’s Timothy Ketit presenting the trophy to me on behalf of Red Line.

The 3 fastest drivers of the day were me, Julian Pang and Ray Eoh.

Julian is an outstanding driver – he drives like a robot. His times from every one of his runs were only 0.1 seconds apart, and if you factor in the fact that he was borrowing someone else’s car to drive in that’s just crazy.

Ray is another great driver and a regular competitor in autocross/gymkhana events.

It was a really fun event for me as I got to slide my car around a bit.

The only thing I was not happy with was the surface of the car park at Han Chiang College – that tar eats tyres for breakfast and if they do another event there I’ll need to think twice before entering!

Also, my handbrake kept jamming (but I have since replaced it with a drift-style handbrake) and my suspension went spongy on me again. I still don’t know what the problem with my dampers are – sometimes they are fine and sometimes they feel like jelly. I’ll need to spend some time to figure it out.

I’d like to thank DC Shoes, Tommax Stickers and Northern Garage for supporting my racing endeavors and also Jack Hoo and Andy Teh for taking such great shots of me and my car!

Oh yeah, we made this video of one of my runs in the competition – did you watch it yet?
