MEDIA TEMPLE SUCKS

Media Temple Sucks

“In many ways you could say our main product is customer support. It’s what we work on the hardest. 90% of our staff is in some way dedicated to this process. Beyond fast speeds, amazing technology, and great uptime records – we realize that we must judge our success on how well we have supported our clients. It’s really what matters the most in business today.

We promise:

To be accessible, friendly, and helpful at all times.
To answer the phone when you call, 24/7 – no exceptions.
Reply to your emails and support tickets promptly.
To provide timely information regarding system incidents.
And lastly, we promise to listen. Should we fall short of our goals we want to know about it so we can quickly remedy areas needing improvement.

We value customer feedback. Please give us a report card on how we’re doing. We want to know the good, the bad, and everything in-between. We’re listening.”

The above was taken from our hosting company, Media Temple’s website.

I almost wanted to laugh when I read it, because NONE of it is true.

I’ve never been able to get any helpful technical support from ANYONE at Media Temple. Calls usually end up like, “Sorry sir, we don’t have a solution to that problem,” or, “It appears that we don’t have a backup of the data that you requested,” or “There’s nothing we can do about that because it’s our company policy.”

When sending in support requests through their website, I’ve often had to wait days and had to resort to sending in repeated requests before anyone would fucking reply, and then even the reply was of no help whatsoever.

And I didn’t even get to the downtime yet.

If you are considering US-based hosting, please DO NOT choose this company. If it wasn’t for the fact that we have a LOT of inter-linked and complicated websites/blogs/etc, I would switch hosting companies in the blink of an eye.

They have caused me an incredible amount of grief for the past year, and every day that something doesn’t go wrong is another day that I should go buy a lottery ticket.

But if anyone has a hassle-free method of switching for me, PLEASE let me know.

  1. Hi,
I got an account with Mediatemple on friday – playing with things today … and well yes MediaTemple really does suck! The backend may look pretty but its not very logical. Style over substance. My website is quicker with MediaTemple, but the gridserver backed is slow as fuck!

  2. An easy way to move your site:
If your on a GS gridserver

    1) backup all your files domain//html folder
*if you have SSH access best to compress it by either zip or tar
    their on a Linux flatform
    tar -cvzf html.tar.gz html

*if you don’t have, you can FTP the whole site.

    2) Backup your database
    * export ->if you have phpmyadmin panel

    3) test the site in your local server like xampp (apache, sql, php server)
*usually you have to change the configuration file so you can run it.
*different CMS and blog software like wordpress have this files
*it can be configuration.php or wp-config.php
    * usually it’s where your database password and db name is.
    * if you don’t have one, it can be in any of your function or your site does not have any Database (easier to move)

    4) Test your site locally, check if everything’s ok.

    5) Now you can say Goodbye to Overrated Media Temple.

  3. Right there with you BBB. I have been hosting with (mt) Media Temple for years on end and the absolute biggest mistake I’ve ever made in my professional life was migrating my entire client portfolio to the (gs) Grid-Service plan. I now have to field calls and emails from all my different clients every single time their site or email goes down which unfortunately is on a regular basis. I look like the biggest fool now for having recommended them. Half of my bread & butter comes from consulting and this (gs) has absolutely destroyed my reputation. Class Action Lawsuit anybody? It’s a shame, they really did used to be a legitimate company. It seems the focus now is all about appearance rather than performance.

  4. Interesting. I was just about to purchase hosting at Media Temple but am having second thoughts now. I think I will stick with the company that I started out with instead of moving. Thanks for the info.

  5. Anything over hyped usually has issues…

Are you still with media temple?

If not, what hosting are you using (or will you recommend)?

  6. lol, yeah mt does suck, I would recommend these hosts:

    liquidweb
    prioritycolo
    dotable

but don’t take my word for it, ask around and google them

  7. Class action lawsuit = yes.

  8. If there is a lawsuit action I’d like to be informed – I am an illustrator and I get work through the referral to my portfolio. I cant advertise with them- I cant refer to a service that is as unreliable as this.

  9. I have just experienced the worst experience in my life ever! I am in this business for 10 years now and I can tell that the guys at MT really suck! I was waiting for 2 days for an answer from their “24/7 UNRIVALED SUPPORT” (hope they got rid of that badge on their homepage cause it is simply NOT TRUE! – TECHNICAL SUPPORT DOESN’T EXIST ON MT, YOU ARE LEFT ALONE BY YOURSELF, PERIOD). After 2 days i received an answer from their customer support saying that they had got my previous email on queue (so they suck so much they do not even know how to mange their own queue system). I was simply asking them to install a gem for me since i couldn’t do it due to the limitations they put on their bloody GS (again, I warn everyone here, never judge a book from its cover, this is what i did and even tough GS sounds sexy that is nothing but a piece of crap). I had experienced several downtimes on my domain and technical difficulties and never received any feedback or any kind of valuable answer on that. I only know that I have payed those thief more than 200 USD a year. Now, result is that i have wasted my precious time and money, and I have lost a client and I am thinking to sue those MF since this is not a professional way of working.

  10. I’ve been hosting my site and email with MT for about 4 or 5 years now and have become so frustrated and fed up with their awful downtime and flacid customer service that I’m finally going to make the switch to a local hosting company that has been highly recommended by many colleagues (www.iphouse.com).

In the past 4 years, my email goes dead for 12 to 24 hours at LEAST every six months. They post things on their status page saying that the “Grid Cluster has…” blah blah blah and that they’re working on finding a permanent solution. I then call, wait on hold for half an hour, express to them my frustration at trying to run a business without email, and they send me a follow-up, again expressing that they’re hot on the trail of a permanent solution.

Well guess what, they’ve never found it. 3 or 4 months later, the same thing happens again.

I’m FED UP and I’m outta here.

  11. I’m thinking about starting a class action lawsuit. They do not actually provide what is advertised and after three years of trying to get the same issue resolved, i’m sick and tired of dealing with them. Have others had the same issues with products not working as advertised?

  12. It’s been a little over 2 years and I’ve FINALLY moved all of my websites off of Media Temple. I had so many calls and emails from my clients about downtimes, slowdowns and general frustration.

DO NOT, I repeat, do not even consider running a WordPress site on Media Temple. Even calling them doesn’t help. All they’ll do is deflect blame, say they’re working on it and even blame YOU.

  13. I just moved off of MediaTemple to A Small Orange and talk about an instant speed increase. Once the nameservers took effect and I got my wp-config.php file uploaded (I was having some issues with a 66MB SQL file), my site was running perfectly. I just gotta set up Mint and that is it. ^_^;;

  14. After 6 years with mt (yes, 6), here’s my farewell to one of their “resolved” posts:

I am sorry, but this is simply not true. Or connecting 5 minutes to your mailserver is what you would call resolved? I know you will remove this message from here and contact me to offer some 6 months of free hosting, but don’t try it. Please. I was hosting my website on MT for I think 6 years, but it is time to close the deal.

I was good customer, I paid all my bills, I referred some people to you and what I’ve got in return? An unreliable service with more troubles and issues than Soviet spaceship? No thanks. I need my emails to work, I need my website to work or otherwise it is a waste of money and you wasted a lot of my money.
