ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

I was nominated by my good buddy Jeremy Hale to participate in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge … thanks mate. Haha

I nominated:

1) Tavin Thammaraks
2) Leon Low
3) Quirt Crawford
4) Tengku Djan Ley
5) Dato’ Seri Nazri Aziz Nedim aka BossNed
6) Georgia Rose Manley

And here’s Leon’s challenge video:

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.

BADBOYBEN X DC SHOES DISTRICT 4

BadBoyBen x DC Shoes District 4

This is my first post of 2012, so let’s start it off with a bang, k?

A while ago, I was given the opportunity to do something that very few people in this world will ever get – which was to design my own colorway of a shoe!

DC Shoes let me design my own version of their premium luxury model, the District 4.

To me this is one of the rarest honors available in the world today – how many people do you know who have their own shoe?

And to be the FIRST Malaysian to do this? An even greater privilege.

Before I talk about the shoe, I just want to express my sincerest thanks to Jeremy Hale, Gary Parsons and DC Shoes for bestowing this great, great honor upon me.

BadBoyBen x DC Shoes District 4

When Cherice Fredricks first showed me a sample of the District 4 (way back in 2010 when we were in Hong Kong) I was blown away because it was such a refreshing silhouette.

Clean, striking and instantly recognizable, it was refreshing to see something so fresh in a day and age where shoe designs are just being rehashed and copied over and over again.

I fell in love with the shape of the shoe immediately.

BadBoyBen x DC Shoes District 4

I had never designed a colorway before so I sat and looked at the sample shoe that Cherice gave to me.

I did this for weeks.

I looked at the shoe from every different angle and millions of color combinations ran through my mind.

And during this time my respect for the guys who keep designing awesome colorways and fresh looking kicks time and time again kept increasing.

In the end I decided to base the shoe on the 4 colors used in printing – cyan, yellow, magenta and black (or CYMK to those in the industry)

This is because first and foremost, I am a designer and I spent my formative years designing all sorts of printing material – brochures, catalogs, posters, flyers, banners, etc etc so I thought it would be a nice throwback to where I started it all.

BadBoyBen x DC Shoes District 4

I made the body of the shoe cyan as I felt that was the most striking color and could be seen from miles away.

The side-padding, edges and label I made yellow as I felt that those were the best places to introduce a color contrast to make the shoe really pop.

The best place to use magenta was then the laces, the piping around the edges of the tongue and also on the inner lining/insoles of the shoe. I felt that using magenta on the inside gave the shoe a warmer and more inviting feeling.

For the black on the shoe, I asked DC if they had a “carbon fiber-look” material as cars are such a huge part of my life and I love carbon fiber so much … DC came back to me and said they found this awesome fabric and I used it on the tongue of the shoe, as you can see here. The fabric is so awesome!

BadBoyBen x DC Shoes District 4

Just in case I ever forgot whose shoe this was, I designed a repeating print for the inside. Kekeke

Actually, I wanted my name on the shoe, but not in a very overt and prominent way on the exterior so I put my logo on the inside.

The only other place you can see it is on the tiny label on the tongue.

BadBoyBen x DC Shoes District 4

Oh the heel of the shoe, I put 2 phrases that I basically live my life by – Work Hard & Play Hard.

I balance both as well as I can, so one on the left foot and one on the right.

This amazing photo was shot by Eric Ooi last year. Eric is an amazing photographer who I am also extremely pleased to be able to call my friend. I have a lot of respect for him coz he’s someone who shunned the corporate life in favor of pursuing his passion – photography. And he’s doing really well which reaffirms my belief that Passion + Conviction = Success.

Once again, I would like to thank from the bottom of my heart Jeremy Hale, Gary Parsons & DC Shoes for giving me this most fucking awesome opportunity. Being the first Malaysian in history to design his own colorway is one of the coolest things I could ever hope to be. I’d also like to thank Cherice Fredricks and Hommy Diaz for all their help in the process – I couldn’t have done it without the both of you!

Thank you for making me one of the happiest guys in the world!

INSTAGRAM – MY FAVORITE APP FOR THE IPHONE!

Instagram - My Favorite App For The iPhone!

By far my favorite app for the iPhone is Instagram, a nifty photo sharing app that has become an indispensable part of my daily life.

I love taking photos (as most of you know) and Instagram has made it incredibly easy for iPhone users to share their snapshots with others.

Instagram is filled with a tightly-knit community of people who have a genuine appreciation of spontaneous photography, and I feel that they are mostly people who realize that it’s the COMPOSITION and NOT the equipment that you use that makes a great and engaging photo.

The super-friendly and supportive community on Instagram is definitely one of the major reasons why I’m such a big fan of the app.

Another reason I like Instagram is because I think THIS is what Twitter should have been like.

I’m not self-centered enough to have a Twitter account – i.e. I don’t think I’m important enough that people would want to know every fucking thing that I’m doing all the time, but Instagram lets users share creative photographs with like-minded people and you can also talk/comment/discuss about the photos, which is cool.

Instagram - My Favorite App For The iPhone!

To date, I’ve posted more than 1100 photos on Instagram, so if you have the app, check out my feed (username BadBoyBen)

If you have an iPhone but don’t have Instagram, download it and check it out (it’s free)

If you don’t have an iPhone then hurry up and buy one so you can start using Instagram!

BADBOYBEN TAKES 2ND RUNNER UP AT SEPANG INTERNATIONAL F1 CIRCUIT

Lotus X BBB Exige S

DC SHOES OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE – JANUARY 10, 2011

BADBOYBEN TAKES 2ND RUNNER UP AT SEPANG INTERNATIONAL F1 CIRCUIT.

January 10, 2011 – Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – DC is proud to announce a podium for endorsed driver BadBoyBen who competed in the “Time to Attack” invitational at Sepang International F1 Circuit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia over the holiday period.

The event, arguably South East Asia’s premier Time Attack, saw over 100 vehicles from Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore come together for a meet celebrating the finale of the 2010 driving season. Strictly invitational, each driver had to have recorded an exceptional time during the 2010 season at the prestigious F1 circuit. Ben has done this in both his DC Subaru Sti and more recently in his Lotus Exige, especially prepared for him by Lotus Cars Malaysia.

In the “Fast & Furious” category which is sponsored by Lotus, Ben raced exceptionally well to secure the 2nd Runner Up position in a field that is one class above the “Expert” category reserved for professional drivers in professional race cars. Demonstrating exceptional skill, Ben’s achievement was awesome considering his vehicle competed with stock suspension and tyres. His modifications in the new Exige at this stage only includes Lotus Sports Stage 2 Exhaust and Unichip piggyback ECU. The vehicle that took the category was heavily modified, so with further upgrades we are expecting even better results from the vehicle in the meets of 2011.

“We are extremely pleased with the vehicle, and Ben’s driving under tutelage of Malaysian race legend Oh Kah Beng of Lotus Malaysia” said DC’s South Asia General Manager Jeremy Hale. “The car is looking great and we are looking forward to helping them strive for excellence in 2011 in our commitment to the auto category. Lotus’ vehicles are exceptional, and their commitment to the progression of the motorsport is inspirational”.

Congratulations to Bad Boy Ben, and Lotus Cars Malaysia for a fantastic result. DC is excited to follow the performance of the vehicle through the new year.

LOTUS X BBB EXIGE @ ZEROTOHUNDRED.COM’S TIME TO ATTACK 2010 FINAL!

I’ve been pretty quiet this week, but that’s only because I’ve locked myself away to edit videos.

Here is the first one – a video I made of our recent outing to Zerotohundred.com’s Time To Attack 2010 Final!

I hope you like it.

LOTUS X BBB: MOTORSPORT PLAYGROUND

Lotus X BadBoyBen Custom Exige S

One very important aspect of this Lotus X BBB Exige project is the actual look of the car, since there are some very specific colors that I want/need to use (you will find out why later)

Helping me to design and execute the livery of the car is Remus Chang, owner of Motorsport Playground – the most renowned automobile vinyl sticker shop in Malaysia.

Lotus X BadBoyBen Custom Exige S

Coincidentally, Remus and I went to the same university and studied the same course (though he was a few years my junior)

Lotus X BadBoyBen Custom Exige S

Motorsport Playground has these FUCKING AWESOME driving simulators running GRAN TURISMO 5.

The simulators have BRIDE BUCKET SEATS.

I was playing this for hours. Hahaha

Lotus X BadBoyBen Custom Exige S

I came in very late with the car but Remus didn’t bat an eyelid and got his boys to start work on it right away.

This is only a temporary design (coz we need to rush it for the Time To Attack Final on this Sunday)

Remus and I will begin working on something more eye-catching once the dust settles from Sunday’s event.

I’d like to thank Remus Chang and all the staff at Motorsport Playground for doing such an amazing job in such a short period of time!

LOTUS X BBB: MAKING HISTORY

Lotus X BadBoyBen Custom Exige S

Some of you might have noticed that there has been a lot of Lotus-related news on my website recently, and there is actually a very good reason for that.

Lotus Malaysia AND Lotus UK are collaborating with me on a car project – the type of which has never been done by either of them before, so … *cue drumroll and fanfare* … we are in the process of making history!

I’m not sure if any of you picked up something was going on when I wrote about my visits to Lotus here and here, but head of Lotus Malaysia, Oh Kah Beng and I have been working on this for a good few months now, and finally everything has come together.

The project’s aim is to bring more awareness to the Lotus brand amongst car enthusiasts and bring attention to the fabulous small-car chassis that they are so well-known for.

With Lotus’ recent change in top level management and the introduction of their new range of upcoming models at the Paris Motor Show you know that Lotus CEO Dany Bahar and his team are out to shake things up a bit in the automotive world and do things a bit differently.

And one of the words that has been used to describe me in the past is – different.

Hahaha … anyways

Ladies and gentlemen, it is my absolute pleasure and honor to introduce you to the Lotus X BadBoyBen Exige S:

Lotus X BadBoyBen Custom Exige S

Lotus has custom built this brand new car for me and I will be using it to compete in selected time attack and gymkhana events in 2011, but it’s first outing will be next weekend (12 Dec 2010) at Zerotohundred’s Time To Attack Final so make sure you are there when I take the car out for it’s first shakedown!

Remember in my Time To Attack Report, where I mentioned that my goal for 2011 was to build a sub-2-minute-28-second time attack car for Sepang?

This is that car.

However, I will not only be racing with the car but driving it daily and sharing with you guys what it is to live with a niche car like a Lotus.

Over time, I will also give you some background information on how we put this car together and tell you about some of the people who made it happen. Without everyone’s generosity and support, none of this would have been possible.

A Lotus is such a rare sight on Malaysian roads that it is almost a myth. In fact, in Penang you’re more likely to see a Bentley, Ferrari or Lamborghini than a Lotus.

I’m going to change all that. You are going to see this car EVERYWHERE around town!

🙂

Lotus X BadBoyBen Custom Exige S

The Lotus Exige has always been one of my dream cars, ever since the MK1 was first launched in 2000, and to have the opportunity to drive/race one now with the full support of Lotus is much much more than a dream come true for me.

I would like to thank first and foremost Oh Kah Beng for believing in me and Laura Coase (Lotus UK) for her invaluable support.

I’d also like to thank all our sponsors and people who worked tirelessly for the past couple of months to build this car for me!

P.S. If you like what you see and are interested in test driving one of the most amazing cars on the planet contact Lotus Malaysia on +6012-2771770

P.P.S. There’s actually a second, MUCH BIGGER part to this project, but we won’t be able to tell you about this till the middle of next year … but keep your eyes peeled for hints that I will drop periodically on my blog.

😉
